Melbourne Bike Fest: Cycle & Design Tour
Sunday 19th February
10.00am - 4.00pm
Meet at Acca
111 Sturt St
Southbank
Cycling, art and design come together in this Cycle&Design tour of Docklands & Southbank. You’ll explore these areas by bicycle while experiencing the numerous cultural attractions they have to offer. When you've finished cycling, you'll be learning an age-old skill - crochet - and you’ll discover how it can be used in innovative ways.
Our tour will start at The Malthouse Kitchen, 111 Sturt Street Southbank where we'll have a coffee before we set off. From here we meander through Southbank to the Yarra River where we'll be stopping at the Polly Woodside Tall Ship. We won't be getting onto the ship ($15 each) but there is so much to see around it! Then it's onto the architect designed Webb bridge at Yarra's Edge and around the ANZ bank building where we'll be stopping to see a fantastic piece of artwork in the landscape, "The Water's Edge". From here it's around the Docklands development, stopping at the Docklands markets, passing the almost re-completed wheel.
From here we'll join the Footscray Road cycle path and cycle down into Docklands, Quay Development where we'll be stopping at a soundscape and at the Loading Dock Cafe for a coffee. After this, it's back along the Southbank Boulevard and up to Federation Square to see the Melbourne Bike Fest Treadlie Market and the Better by Bike Design Awards. We'll be having lunch here. Then it's off to RMIT University where we'll be doing a one hour crochet workshop.
You can view the path on Google Maps here
Bring your own bike or hire one of the Melbourne Bike Share Bikes at our starting point.
All materials and afternoon tea will be provided. Please ensure you bring your helmet!
Cycle&Design will have you pedalling, creating and exchanging tips and tricks both on & off the bike.
You can read about our previous Sydney tours below!
We start in Surry Hills at Deux Ex Machina Cafe in Bourke Street Surry Hills; then cycle to Powerhouse Museum to see two extraordinary exhibitions: "Love Lace" and The Wiggles From here it's off the the beautiful Customs House Library at Circular Quay where you can see their current exhibition, have lunch and rediscover the joy of cycling around Circular Quay.
Then it's off to Kings Cross where we do a one hour crochet workshop demonstrating how an age old skill can be used in contemporary ways. After that we'll cycle back to Deus, stopping off at Object Gallery along the way!
The tour starts at 8.30 am and finishes at 3.30pm. We'll be cycling on quiet streets though we will have to cycle on some main roads. We've chosen the route so that there aren't too many hills though once we get back to Surry Hills it will be a bit steep.
If you're looking for a fun day out that includes a gentle cycle, lots of inspiring design and some new skills, then this is the cycle tour for you. You can view the entire route on Google Maps here
The tour costs $59 which includes coffee, entry to the Powerhouse Museum, the handmade design workshop and all materials.
The tour is hosted by ArtCycle Sydney and is led by Angelina Russo, a registered Bike Tour Leader with Bicycle NSW and member of ArtCycle Sydney. She has a Senior First Aid Certificate from St Johns.
